How To: Create Bootable High Sierra Flash Drive

Apple recently released macOS High Sierra and all supported Macs can download it now from the Mac App Store free of charge. However, the installer and files are automatically deleted once the installation is complete. If you want to have a recovery drive that can also act as installation media for your Mac then follow the steps below to create a bootable macOS High Sierra USB flash drive.

Note: Any Mac running Sierra is eligible for the High Sierra upgrade, I recommend using an 8GB or larger flash drive as the installer is around 6GB.

1.) Launch the Mac App Store and download the High Sierra installer. Once this download completes the installer will open automatically. DO NOT proceed, close the installer (it will remain in your applications folder)

2.) Navigate to your applications folder within the Finder. Right click on the High Sierra installer and click 'Show Package Contents' then open 'Contents' and open 'Resources'

3.) Launch the Terminal and type sudo then leave a space. From the 'Resources' folder you opened previously drag the item named createinstallmedia into the Terminal window. Type --volume and leave a space

4.) Insert your flash drive

5.) Drag your flash drive icon into the Terminal window then type --applicationpath followed by a space. Drag the High Sierra installer from the applications folder into the Terminal window then press Enter/Return to begin the process.

6.) Enter your password when prompted and then press y when asked if you wish to continue

The process will now run. Your flash drive will be erased and the necessary files will be copied. The Terminal will inform you once the process is complete. Once completed close the Terminal window and eject your flash drive. You now have a bootable High Sierra flash drive

HELP: MacBook Air Keyboard Problem

Usually I would write some long introduction about the product and then the issue, however given how much frustration this is causing me I'll get straight to the point.

I have a 2011 13 inch MacBook Air running macOS Sierra, my problem is that randomly the

` 2 w s

keys stop working. They NEVER work when I boot up the computer (for password entry) but once I log in they seem to work fine. The problem with this issue is that I can't tell if it is hardware or software related. If I enable the keyboard viewer it shows no response from the keys when they aren't working.

The solution seems to be press the keys until they start responding again. Mouse keys and other accessibility features are disabled and the issue is present on both El Capitan and Sierra (although seems less frequent in El Cap. than Sierra (this is why I think the issue is software related).

The laptop has also had its battery replaced (by authorised repair shop) it is possible they may have damaged the keyboard?

Has anyone else encountered/solved this issue. Any help would be appreciated

FIXED: Android WiFi Keeps Dropping

Please Note:
This fix applies to the issue where the WiFi on your Android device randomly disconnects and reconnects to your WiFi network. The problem usually starts when you buy a new device or a new Wireless router.

Fix:
The problem is not your device, as such deleting the network and re-adding it, clearing your WiFi cache or installing a third party WiFi client will not fix this issue. The problem is with your router. If your router supports 2.4ghz AND 5ghz your Android device will constantly fluctuate between the two of them, when it fluctuates our WiFi won't work on your device until it has reconnected.

I noticed that my LG G4 wouldn't keep a steady connection to my wireless network when I switched from an old Netgear router to a BT HomeHub. To fix this issue go into your routers settings and either disable the 5ghz network or separate the 2.5ghz and 5ghz into two different networks with different passwords and only connect to one of them on your Android device. The problem should now be fixed.

Additional:
Instructions for process on BT HomeHub - Click HERE

In some versions of Android you can tell your device to prefer 2.5ghz or 5ghz networks, I believe Google have removed this in Nougat (7.0) and it is not available on LG devices.

Where to Buy Cheap Used Macs

Eight years ago I bought my first Mac and have since moved through a number of desktop and laptops from PowerPC to Intel. However, I have bought very few of these Macs new and mostly use eBay to pick up new computers. This does present some issues, how do you know which sellers are reputable and worthy of your hard earned cash? Below are a number of eBay accounts that I have either used or thoroughly vetted and deemed safe. Please be aware as I am UK based I cannot guarantee these sellers will ship internationally.

  • MacBank Home - A great source for all things Mac, reasonable prices and a huge selection which is updated weekly. They also offer Apple displays and adapters
  • Hoxton Macs - A little more expensive than MacBank, but still reasonable and have a selection that fits a wide array of budgets
  • MacBank Pro - This is the 'Pro' arm of MacBank, basically it just sells Mac Pro's and parts for them. Sometimes they have Xserves at good prices
  • Remac Spares - A few weeks ago they had dozens of MacBooks and some iMacs, they seem slower to stock than MacBank and Hoxton, but have a few good deals
  • UsMac2014 - A huge selection of used Apple devices at reasonable prices, definitely worth a look
  • Apple - I know cheap is in the title and this isn't an eBay shop, but Apple do offer some great deals on used Macs. You can also get Apple Care on these Macs and they come in Apple packaging
This list will be updated as I become aware of more sellers

FIX: Ubuntu WiFi Connected but Pages Won't Load (HP Stream 11)

If you are having trouble with WiFi on your HP Stream 11 (running Ubuntu 14.04) I have finally found a fix that has lasted much longer than the fix previously listed on this blog. Now my only remaining issue is to get the trackpad working.

To fix WiFi:

Open Terminal and enter:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi

Then

sudo apt-get update

Finally

sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms linux-firmware

Then reboot your machine. WiFi should now function as intended. You can see the original Ask Ubuntu post HERE

Please note these instructions are for the first edition HP Stream 11 (released 2014) as such I do not know if they will work on the newer model

Delete Facebook for Android Now

While I've already advised uninstalling Facebook if you're having trouble with your Nexus 9 crashing, a study has found Facebook and Messenger can reduce Android battery life up to 20% and uninstalling Facebook will make other apps load 15% faster on average.
